Developmental Milestones

Birth to 6 months
o Responds to sounds
o Looks at faces
o Reaches for objects
o Sits with some support

6 to 12 months
o Sits independently
o Crawls and begins to pull to stand
o Responds to name
o Babbles, says "dada" or "mama"

12 to 18 months
o Walks five steps without falling
o Begins using words
o Points or gestures to show wants
o Builds tower using three cubes

18 to 24 months
o Uses two word sentences
o Points to three body parts
o Sits in chair without falling
o Refers to self by name

24 to 36 months
o Jumps with feet together
o Imitates drawing lines and circles
o Completes simple puzzles
o Follows 2 step directions

To be eligible for Early Intervention Services in New Jersey, a child must be between the ages of birth and 36 months, and must have delays of at least 25% in two of the following areas of development or at least 33% in one area:A happy pair.

" Gross Motor
" Fine Motor
" Sensory (includes vision and hearing)
" Cognitive
" Communication (receptive and expressive)
" Social-Emotional
" Adaptive

A child may also be eligible for Presumptive Eligibility through one of the following diagnoses:

" Down Syndrome
" Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
" Hearing Impairment
" Visual Impairment
" Autism/PDD
" Spina Bifida
" Cerebral Palsy
" Trisomy 13, 18, etc.
" Fragile X Syndrome
" Hydrocephalus

In addition, if a child has a diagnosed physical or mental condition that has a high probability of resulting in developmental delay, they may be considered eligible for services. A letter from a physician is required in these situations.

All children must receive a comprehensive initial evaluation within 45 days of referral, regardless of category of eligibility.
